Are Prostate Cancer Hereditary?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: I think you have my previous questions about the prostate and how to keep from having problems down the road. I mentioned my mothers brother died of prostate cancer at 74 years. He underwent castration about a year before he died. If he had had that operation 15 years or so it before he got the cancer, wouldn't he have faired better. That's what I have been doing since I was 47, trying to keep the T levels down. My doctor said I had the smallest prostate for my age they have ever checked..

Brief Answer:
No specific intervention; regular check ups and PSA monitor..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns about prostate problem and prostate cancers.

Though you have family history of prostate cancer, based on details provided, I don't see any indication that you will develop this cancer or any problems related to prostate in recent future. Further, I would like to state that there are no scientifically proven facts that clearly prevents prostate issues. Some experts however believe that exercise, good amount of omega fatty acids and regular sexual activities (off course safe sex) may play a role in preventing prostate problem.

I am happy to know PSA level at this age is all well under limits and the gland by itself is normal sized. These are the most important findings that convinces me you should have a healthy prostate for many years. So do not be overly concerned about it. Include general exercise, avoid smoking, add fish / omega fatty acid supplements and practice safe sex to keep it healthy.

PSA screening and yearly per rectal examination can help your doctors identify prostate problems (if any) early and treat it.

Hope my answer was both useful and reassuring. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
