Are Small Painful Knots On Thighs A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Feb 2016
Question: In my thigh I have a bunch of small knots that are painful to touch. My leg will also randomly ache where the knots are even though I am not pressing them. I can feel them as they appear to be in the muscle and are small bb or pea size. When I asked my husband to feel he says he doesn't feel anything which leads me to think that they aren't serious or actual knots. My question is what can this be due to and how can I resolve?

I haven't been exercising so I know that isn't causing it.

Brief Answer:
This is for sure not serious!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these knots and the pain that you have reported. Given the size of these knots and that fact that your husband cannot actually feel them means they must be very small in size. For the pain, I will recommend that you take some tylenol to calm these pains. Monitor only for now and if this grows bigger or becomes more painful, I will suggest that you get an ultrasound done to visualize and characterize them. However, there is no immediate evident red flag that should keep you worried at this time. I know you haven't been exercising but please do well to exercise often for good health benefits. It is recommended to do 150minutes of moderate exercise daily.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

Thank you. It actually feels like the lumps and associated pain are contained within one muscle band that starts at top of inner thigh and goes down 1/2-3/4 of inner thigh. Could this just be a strain? Thoughts on what it is now that i can definitely say it is attached to one muscle. Not sure what the muscle is that goes down the inner thigh?

Brief Answer:
Knots unlikely to be a strain!

Detailed Answer:
HI,

It is unlikely for this knots to be from a strain. My real understanding is that these knots may not be actual knots that call for concerns. The pain could be a strain but with you no doing much exercise, this is unlikely. Take the pain medications and avoid constantly palpating to feel these knots. This will resolve the pain and allow for healing. Unless something else comes up, there is no need to seek further medical attention at this time.

I wish you well and keep me posted.

I went to the doctor and she wasnt that helpful. I still have a mild vaginal bacteria infection. She prescribed a cream.

She looked at the knots and said they were my lynph nodes. They are small in size but can be felt. I had a cbc teo weeks ago and all was notmal so that reassured her. She thinks they may be slightly enlarged because i still have a minor bacterial infection in my vagina. My groin nodes were normal size.

Questions
1. Does the vaginal bacterial infection likely explain the thigh lynph nodes?
2. Woyld it be odd to have lynphoma originate in thighs, as my groin, armoits and neck are all normal size?
3. Where are lymph nodes located on thigh? The diagrams i looked at show them high on the thigh near groin and not mid of inner thigh?
4. I have been waking with sweats. I just finished a steroid pack and thought that may be why. I also think i may be going through early menipause but havent had that confirmed. How much seeating is a concern?
5. What is a normal versus large size for lymph nodes?
6. Would the nodes be hard, rubbery, firm or all the above if a concern.

Sorry for all the questions but left doc with more questions than answers .

I went to a doc this morning because my appointment yesterday left me pretty unsettled. They did a CBC, blood clot test and Doppler ultrasound. The cbc was all normal. The Doppler did not enlarged lymph nodes or blood clots.

The doctors diagnosis was superficial phlebitis. He first said superficial thermophlebitis(?). Anyway, he was confident in the diagnose even though there are knots. I am unclear about the definition of superficial phlebitis because it sounds like just inflamed vessels. I did read that they can produce knots. I also read that an ultrasound may only show DVT. Either way, does this diagnosis make sense to you? If it were blood clots he Doppler should have shown it. If lymph nodes were enlarged they said they would have definitely seen it. Beyond that they said it exceeds the capability of the test.

I feel better that they aren't lymph nodes but the diagnosis with the ultrasound results are a little confusing but he was 100% confident in his diagnosis and said that all these knots are nothing to worry about.

Brief Answer:
A DVT must have been seen!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this follow up questions.

If it were a blood clot, the doppler should have seen it. This is the gold standard in identifying DVT. Like you rightly said, phlebitis is inflammation of the blood vessels and nothing much. Am happy all concerning have been [put to rest and we can closely monitor this closely to make sure there is nothing we are missing out on.

I wish you well. Keep me posted and of course, these needs do not immediate raise concerning red flags.
