Are Statins Advisable If Muscle Injury Is There?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Feb 2024
Question: Thank you for answering my questions. I am asking about Statens. In the past several months I have had nerve blocks and ablations on my knee ( damage from replacement) and on both sides of my back (lumbar). My cholesterol numbers have been fine until this year. Now in moderate danger zone. Statens recommended but as I understand it they cause muscle pain, dizziness. I feel utterly flattened. Lack of balance and acute muscle and nerve pain are what the rigorous process over the last 6 months were supposed to alieve. Please advise on the side effects. Thank you, Maryanne

Brief Answer:
Statins are not advisable if muscle injury is there

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

From what I understand from your query, you have history of problems with the muscles. You have recently been advised statins which are cholesterol lowering medicines. Statins are prescribed when LDL >190 (no history of high BP, or blood sugar levels) or triglycerides are really high.

Statins can cause muscle pain. These can also cause muscle damage causing an elevation of CK-MM in blood test. One of the research studies showed the following:
96.5% of the patients taking statin and experiencing muscle symptoms, didnot have elevation of CK-MM. Exercised muscles as being mainly affected in 84%. Right side was affected more than left side. The affected muscles were: pectoral (61.4%), quadriceps femoris (59.8%), the biceps brachii (54.3%) and the deltoid (22.5%) muscles. The majority of symptoms (in 76.9%) appeared within 29 days. It took 5-6 days for symptoms to disappear after discontinuation of statin therapy.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
