Are Strained Eyes And Sensitivity For Low Light A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 May 2016
Question: Hi,
I have good eyesight and no spectacles. However, of late, I find my eyes straining when looking at my computer for few hours at a stretch. Also, I seem to be having increased sensitivity to read in low light now.

I am in the IT industry and need to spend 10-12 hrs looking at my computer for the past 12, 13 years.
I am currently 37 years old.

Does it indicate I am having plus or minus power?

Brief Answer:
Eye strain

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for sending your query to us.

This is a little too early to start the presbyopic correction. We should have a checkup to rule glasses out.
I will presume that you may not need glasses, even if you need them small lifestyle changes will also help.
Proper exercise, rest a good balanced diet and some yoga will help you in the long run. Some dietary supplement like multivitamins will again be useful.

Any further query in this regard please do get back to me.

Regards.

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for getting back to me.

There are two levels of exercises that you have to do.
One for the body including yoga, walk and some aerobic workout.
What you have to take care is,do not start aggressively. Have a slow and sedate start. See how your body adapts then over weeks buildup slowly.Ideally we allow a level to be consolidated for two weeks, then increase the level of exercises.

There is a second group of eye exercises. This has to be done almost every 40 min of computer work, where you will move eyes all around, extreme right and left, up and down and rotation clock and counter clockwise. This brings back circulation to the eye muscles which are skeletal muscles like rest of the body.
These ,once you get into the habit of doing them regularly pays you well in the long run.

As these are slightly new ideas I am offering, any clarification you need, please do get back to me.

Regards.
