Are There Any Drug Interactions Between Coumadin And Acetaminophen?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: I tok darvocet N 100 for years to control severe migraines. I have extensive "auras" in both eyes with the migraines which I theorize are a response to the arteries dilating near the optic chiasma. I had a pulmonary embolism about a month ago, and my doctor ordered an MRI to see if I was in danger of a cerebral bleed from the coumadin. Another doctor in Hawaii, whereI lived in 2010, tried vicodin and percocet for the pain which only resulted in terrible detox and I was put on suboxone. I really ned the darvocet. Is there any possible way I can get it?

Brief Answer:
acetaminphen is a problem

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

The problem with taking darvocet when you are on coumadin is that there is a drug interaction between acetaminophen in the darvocet and the coumadin. This can cause the coumadin level to become elevated, increasing the risk of bleeding. It is essential that you be on the coumadin because of the pulmonary embolus. I think it would be very dangerous for you to take the darvocet for migraines while on coumadin.

There are many medications including gabapentin and beta blockers that can be taken daily to prevent migraines. These medications are much safer to take when you are on coumadin. I suggest that you consult your doctor about one of these options instead of the darvocet.

Regards.
