Are There Any Negative Interactions Between Topamax And Gabapentin?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: I am taking 100 mg of Topamax daily for migraines. I have a fracture at L2 and am having a lot of terrible pain in my back, and leg which is new. My doctor gave me gabapentin 100 mg for the pain. The pharmacist says I could have seizures from taking the two together, and I'm afraid to take the gabapentin. Should I take it?

Brief Answer:
pharmacist is wrong

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Your pharmacist is seriously misinformed. Both topamax and gabapentin are anticonvulsants. Taking the two together is save and in fact make it much less likely that you would have a seizure. 100 mg of gabapentin is a tiny dose and especially of you take it at bedtime (it can be a bit sedating) you should have no problem at all adding it to the topamax.
I also think that you should find another pharmacy
Best wishes for you and I hope you get pain relief soon

My doctor says I can take as many as 3 of the 100 mg gabapentin 3x daily if needed for pain. Could THIS amount be of concern when taken with Topamax 100 mg daily? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
not at all

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for the follow up.
This is not a problem. Some people take up to 900 mg of gabapentin three times a day. There are very few side effects from this drug except in some people it causes some sedation as I mentioned earlier. It is completely safe to take it with the topamax. Listen to your doctor and not the pharmacist.
I wish for you great pain relief soon
