Are Three Doses Or Five Doses Of Anti-rabies Vaccination Required After A Dog Bite?

Question: Hello Doctor,

I am 34 years Male
In Sep-2016 a stray dog had bitten me on leg.

I was given only 3 dosage of RABUPUR 1ML injection.
Now, I learned from someone that 5 dosages are required to be injected. I am worried what should I do now, should I be re-vaccinated ?

Please advise.

Hello,

Yes only 3 doses of RABIPUR injection 1ml is needed provided you didn't suffer any deep fresh wound following the dog bite. Your doctor may have decided the dosage after examining the wound. So, its nothing to worry.

What I understand from you that if no new wound is developed after few days of Dog Bite, No need to have more than 3 dosage of Rabipur. Correct ?

I got confused as WHO (world health Org) suggests 5 dosages on 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28th day.

Hello,

The immunization regimen for post exposure with a stray dog involves 5 dose schedule or a 3 dose schedule with 2-1-1 regimen. If you were given 3 doses with 2 injections on the first day and rest two doses on 7 and 21.

However, if you come in contact with a stray dog in future you can take a 5 dose schedule of rabipur.

As of now, no further action is required.
