Question: As I am consulting with specialists and preparing to have a neurectomy in the coming months for chronic migraine -- specifically in the portion concentrated in the sinuses -- I wanted to ask what risks are involved in getting this kind of surgery, since there is no such thing as an absolutely risk free aspect of any life.

Brief Answer:
Possible risks of neurectomy listed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for the query here at “Ask a Doctor “ service.

I have read your new question about the risks of the peripheral neurectomy to treat chronic migraines.

You are right, there are potential risks with every surgical procedure.

In case of peripheral neurectomy this is a minimally invasive procedure done generally under local anesthesia.

Possible risks include hemorrhage at the operation site, infections, increase in the pain or new pain ( trigeminal neuralgia in your case), sensibility changes, corneal problems, facial pain or numbness, etc.

These possible risks may be encountered in about 1 % of the cases.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
