Question: 'Attn: Dr. Diptanshu Das' :

Dear Doctor,

I need your help again. My son is now 6 year and 5 months.

Due to your earlier advise, I managed seasonal cold issues well with steam inhalation and minimal medication.

However, for the past 10 days dry cough troubles my son. We had to use Allout Mosquito repellent that triggered cough to myself, wife and son. We stopped using it now. We managed to come out of the cough issue.

But my son as usual suffers from dry cough.

No fever, no running or blocked nose. But cough only. Doctor confirmed clear lungs. Prescribed Montek LC 3.5 ml at night for 3 days.

But no improvement. When cough starts after food, it brings out all the food by vomiting. After vomiting, he is ok.

At night, when he starts to sleep well, suddenly the cough starts.

This time the cough is more in day time also.

Now using Ascoril Flu and Respinil Syrup but of little use.

Advise from you will help a lot Dr. Please help to manage the cough.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation once again

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service once again.

I understand your situation but once again my emphasis would be on steam inhalation. It works beautifully in dry cough. In this case the allergic trigger is evident. The first set of medicines is proper and should help. I do not think that Ascoril Flu or Respinil Syrup are needed. Nevertheless, you can continue them if you want.

You would need to give it some time. Please give it a few more days to resolve.

Thank you Doctor for your reply.

The sharp cough after food vomits out all that he ate.

Any way to manage this, so that he wont starve until the cough settles on its own ?

I am following the steam inhalation.

Out of your experience, what else can be done for the cough to settle down faster. Please advice Doctor.

Brief Answer:
Please be patient

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I understand your apprehension. However, cough seems to be the primary problem here and it is triggering the gag reflex leading to vomiting. I understand that you are giving steam inhalation and also the medicines that you mentioned. I do not think that there is anything more that needs to be done right now. Aggressive interventions will not change the course of the ailment. You need to be patient.

Dear Doctor,

Thank you your reply.

Followed your instruction as usual. The cough is getting reduced.

I tried Rantac Syrup 5 ml twice a day. This gave very good result and reduced the reflex. Also added Nutrolin B Syrup.

Thank you your valuable guidance Doctor
