Question: Been sick for 3 months, head and lungs full of mucus. Dr put me on Amoxacillin, another Dr put me on Azithramiacin. I’ve took Rocefin I V. It seems to be helping. I have had bronchial pneumonia almost invented a winter. This has been much deeper and I’ve coughed until my lungs are sore: can you explain to me what is going on. I can tell I’m getting better, but not well. I am 76 years old female.

Brief Answer:
Pneumonia complicated with secondary infection...

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concern...

Yes, it seems like you've first got community-acquired pneumonia, which later on got complicated with sinusitis and other secondary infections, causing so many antibiotics therapy and prolonged recovery time...

I'd like to know what all investigations have been done so far, and how were the findings...Could you please summarize them here? You can even upload/attach the reports directly to 'Reports section' of this web page only...

The fact that you're improving despite the delay, is always a good sign that the body is fighting back successfully along with the medications...

If not done already, I'd also consider getting a few investigations done for further evaluation. Namely, a complete Hemogram with ESR, Sputum gram stain, fungal stain as well as Culture sensitivity assay and a CT-chest with PNS(Paranasal sinus).

All these will clarify things further as to establish the diagnosis also. Sinusitis (infection and inflammation of the sinuses around the nose) can be secondary to numerous pathogens (the offending bug could already be resistant to these antibiotics, so a detailed evaluation should be carried out).

Please discuss this with your doctor...

Additionally, please refrain from having any cold beverages, extreme sour foods as they can further worsen the symptoms. Avoid going to any dusty/overcrowded places for the time being.

Take steam inhalation thrice daily. Always ensure to wash your hands with antibacterial hand-wash before and after handling the respiratory secretions, sputum etc. Do wear face masks whenever going outside.

Have plenty of hot beverages (soups, broths, hot menta tea) as they'll work as an immunity booster.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
