Question: Brief Answer:
X ray has no role.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details,
There are a few things to consider when a person says he has blood in the stool.

The first thing is if it is really blood. There are some food and industrial chemicals that might be in stool and give the impression it is blood and in fact, it is not. Unless it bright red blood (which is clear that it is blood). Other times the way to know if you are bleeding or not is having a stool occult blood test or a stool microscopy that will confirm the presence of blood with the stools.

Generally, blood coming from higher levels (stomach and small bowel) converts into a dark coal black colour due to the changes the blood has in the bowel. It is the bleeding from lower parts (colon) that will show as bright red blood.
.
A CBC would be a good test to be done if you suspect bleeding to see if you are developing anaemia as a complication of bleeding and need treatment for it or not.

So to conclude:
1. we need to be sure you are bleeding or not- a stool test like faecal occult blood test and or stool microscopy for blood will help in this.

2. if it is confirmed that you are bleeding then you will need a colonoscopy to find the cause of it.

3. if you have bright red blood while defecating (passing stools) this might also be due to haemorrhoids which are mostly due to constipation so in meantime please make sure you take extra fibre with diet and drink plenty of water.

4. if you had any massive rectal bleeding than an urgent visit to a doctor is needed.

I hope this is helpful and answers your questions but please feel free to reply in case any more clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for follow up,
Dear X ray has nothing to do with colon cancer diagnosis or bleeding problem.
The test basically you need if blood in stool is bright is colonoscopy and if blood in stool is black is Endoscopy.
X ray has no role in your problem.
If your hemoglobin levels are normal then chances are that the bleed was temporary(due to mild rupture of inner gastro intestinal lining).
Thank you!

If my hemoglobin level is good what does that mean? Can an X-ray that’s clear reduce the chances that colon cancer is the issue or a blood test?

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
I depends on the nature and site of bleed.
Bleeding due to mild erosion of inner wall of gut may resolve itself however bleed due to reasons like ulcers hemorrhoids fissues etc would require proper treatment.
Stool for occult test is done to confirm that the tarry black color or reddish color in your stool is blood only.
Once confirmed if its bright red in color and fresh colonoscopy would be done and if its tarry black in nature endoscopy would be done.
Bright red blood means lower intestinal involvement
Tarry black means upper intestinal involvement.
Thank you!

To show if the
Blood is
Coming from the stool or from elsewhere?

Does a CT can show colon cancer or other colon diseases?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ramesh Kumar (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Not a test of choice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Can show but not a test of choice.
It's rather used in diverticulitis diagnosis.
Test of choice is colonoscopy.
Thank you.

I presume a CT scan would likely pick up on advanced colon cancer although a colonoscopy is likely the best way to go to rule out or digonise colon cancer.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Definitely yes any test MRI or CT scan etc or tumour marker enzymes may pick up cancer but if you want to go for a sure shot test then go for Colonoscopy.
All other tests are not 100% reliable.
Thank you!
