Bump On Face, Liquid Oozes When Popped. Why Do They Keep Coming Back? What Should I Do?

Question: I have this bump on my face that has been there for over 10 years and I can pop it and clear liquid comes out I squeeze it till the bump is no longer there but within a few days it comes back every time I do this. I have the same bump on the back of my neck, I tried to squeeze all the clear fluid out some came out but it continued to move under my skin which I continued to squeeze it out of those areas as well, next thing I knew it was close to 3 inches long of a line of bumps, took about 30 minutes till no fluid was left to come out, and now a couple days later the same bump that was originally there is back, with the same clear fluid coming out and once again spreading. I also now after this happened have a patch of these same bumps right where my hair line starts at the back of my neck, with this fluid coming out, these are the only ones that are terribly sore to the touch. I'm curious on what these bumps are and why they won't ever stay gone and keep coming back. I would highly appreciate it if u could help me put with this.

Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

The lesions you have mentioned is typical of recurrent folliculitis or recurrent infection of the hair follicles. These lesions are most probably caused by bacterial infection of Staphylococcus aureus.

In the beginning when the infection is not florid, the fluid inside these lesions will be clear but later gets to accumulate pus.

If you keep squeezing the bump, the infected fluid spreads through the layers of the skin and becomes hard for the body's immune system to fight the infection, which is why you may be getting recurrent infections at the same place.

Sometimes it is seen that diabetics and other immuno-suppressed persons tend to get recurrent folliculitis doe to lower immunity so kindly do get checked up for diabetes.

The line of bumps is due to the spread of the infected fluid through other regions of the skin thus spreading the infection.

In order to prevent such from occurring again, you will need to keep your skin hygienic and clean. Take a shower regularly. Avoid wearing same clothes for a long time, preferably changes the clothes everyday. Wear cotton garments to prevent sweat accumulation and more chance of infection.

You may apply Fucidin ointment to the skin lesions 3 times a day for a week for best results. Avoid touching or pressing the lesions even if they pain or itch.

Eat healthy. Keep well hydrated. Avoid junk food, smoking, alcohol as they lower body immunity and reduce body's ability to fight infections.

I hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Wishing speedy recovery.
