Bumped The Side Of My Upper Shin Hard By Running

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2020
Question: Bumped the side of my upper shin hard by running into a coffee table, so hard I thought I fractured the bone. What is strange is that since then, there is no bruise at the site of the injury, but there is a large red spot covering my knee, just above the injury. A year ago, I bruised my shin, hitting it less hard than I did this time, and I still have a large bruise a year later (age 63). The red mark doesn’t hurt, but it’s very red. I can barely touch the site of the injury, so it’s curious there’s no bruise at the site. I’m a liver transplant patient, 9 years out. Just want to make sure there’s not a blood clot or something similar. Thank you very much for any information you may be able to provide, I appreciate being able to ask this question.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to hematoma formation .

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

A redness above the area of injury can be due to hematoma formation . This can be related to a soft tissue injury in the area . It is best to get an MRI scan of the knee joint done to find the extent of injury you have suffered . Large hematoma may need a surgical drainage and prescription antibiotics .
Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with this condition.

I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician nearby for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
I hope this answers your query.
