Can Alprazolam, Allegra D, Diphenhydramine And Phenylephrine Test Positive For Methamphetamine In A Lab Test?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: I take alprazolam, ibuprofen, allegra D,diphenhydramine, phenylephrine, acetaminophen, and a psoriasis compound that I'm not positive what all is in it besides 2%Sal acid, LCD Betatrex, all in velvachol. Of course I'm not taking all the allergy meds or pain reliever at the same time, that's just the different ones I have. Any chance of a combination of any of them would test positive for methamphetamine in a lab test? Could my body chemistry change it into either of the two isomer d or l versions or show up that way? Solvent used in making methamphetamine , either that's left over after some meth strained out. Absorbing that into your hands make a positive test results?

Brief Answer:
the decongestants

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The decongestant in allegra d (pseudoephedrine ) and the other decongestant mentioned phenylephrine can both cause false positive reactions for amphetamines or methamphetamines on an initial screening tests.

There are other drugs that can cause false positive for meth but none of the other medications mentioned in your list are included.

The more accurate test , the GC-MS , which stands for gas chromatography , mass spectrometry, would be able clear this up.
This test can be done where a result is a suspected false positive, it would be able to accurately determine that the result is not truly positive.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thanks for your input on the original question. I don't know if you reviewed the first discussion with Dr. Joythi, but I wish you would. Your opinion and Dr. Joythi's appear to differ. From what I can tell by first glance, it's possible that English is a second language for Dr. Joythi and it could have been a factor. I think I stated my questions and concerns appropriately according to the way I understand it all, but you tell me. This is what I'm talking about and where my concerns are. Who's right? What is going misunderstood? Can my body chemistry in conjunction with the meds i take processes and expel metabolites that are consistent with the ones found in illegal drug use specifically methamphetamine? Is my legally produced metabolites so close to and or same as those produced by the ingestion of methamphetamine? Isn't possible for it to be so close that GC or MS testing is unable to be so conclusive or differentiate? Since it gets told both ways depending on what you read, I don't know how anyone can say with certainty. Can you shed light on the subject before I pull my hair out and start drooling on myself?

Brief Answer:
the GC- MS would be able to differentiate

Detailed Answer:
HI

Unfortunately, not able to review other doctor's answers but I can refer you to a site that lists the drugs that can cause false positive reactions-dig.pharm.uic.edu/faq/2011/feb/faq1.aspx

It lists both the decongestants as possible causes of false reactions in some persons.

The GC-MS test is accurate and would be able to differentiate between either of these drugs and any other substance

please feel free to ask anything else

Maybe you can give me a response on another possible way and the only outher way I can think of getting into my system. I'm a ASE certified Master Technician. I'm 38years old and have worked with my hands in greasy, oily conditions since I was 14 and I'm beginning to pay the price. It's impossible to work on everything wearing gloves and years ago I didn't know any better. Developed psoriasis in my early twenties and now I have skin conditions on my hands. Occupational skin disorders. I cleaned out garage where I later found out someone had previously cooked methamphetamine in. He's in prison now I hear. I got three or four full cans of mineral spirits left he had left behind and I thought I'd scored since it's not cheap. I 've used it to wash carburetor parts and outher things in several times. I noticed

Brief Answer:
skin absorption can occur

Detailed Answer:
HI

It is possible for methamphetamine to be absorbed via the skin so if the cans or its contents were contaminated with it and you were in contact with these areas then absorption is possible.

If anything else unclear, you can let me know
