Posted on Fri, 8 Mar 2019
Question: My two month old baby boy has passed stool 3-4 times today. Usually it is once or twice a day The texture of the stool is also different from the usual. Also, there is a spot of stool every time he passes gas. The mother had a dose of Augmentin two days back and has been having Paracetamol 500 twice daily since then because of dental treatment. Also, right from his birth, he had been having both breast milk and formula milk but from last 1 week he has shifted more towards breast milk only

Brief Answer:
Amoxicillin-clavulanate and breastfeeding.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin) can get secreted in the breast milk of a nursing mother. Occasional diarrhea and rash in the diaper region are very common manifestations. But they are not serious adverse effects and they are no indication to stop the antibiotic therapy in the mother.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting. You need not to worry. A spot of stool while passing gas is also very common.

I suggest you shift more and more towards breastfeeding and suggest you give exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is 6 months of age.

Hope I have answered your query.
