Can Cipro Help Cure UTI In An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: I am a 68 year old woman with no medical issues. I take only cholesterol drugs regularly (both my mom and dad had high cholesterol--my good is also high). Anyway, my local doctor is off today and I have a UTI (had lots of them). I have some minocycline tables (50 mg) left from an eye infection a few weeks ago and I was wondering if I could take that as an antibiotic and, if so, what dosage? I also have some cipro from Mexico which is not expired and it is 500 mgs. Thoughts?? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Cipro 250 mg twice daily for 7-14 days, depending on response ma'am :)

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I prefer you taking the ciprofloxacin 250 mg, twice daily along with the following suggestions:

+Drink plenty of water
+Cranberry juice as tolerated
+1 tbsp of baking soda in a glass of water 2-3 times daily
+Shower once daily
+Avoid any sexual activity
+Keep the genital region dry and clean at all times
+If there is any pain or burning sensation then: Try to get your hands on a syrup containing Di sodium hydrogen citrate, and mix 1 tbsp in a glass of water and have it 2-3 times a day

As you seem to be getting recurring UTIs, here is some added information:

+Recurrent UTIs almost always have some underlying cause like prolapsed uterus, renal tract stones, vaginal prolapse, etc. So once you get in touch with your doctor then please do request for an elaborate evaluation

+Please do get a urine culture and sensitivity investigation conducted as I do suspect you to be resistant to numerous antibiotics by your age ma'am, which is common in todays day and age. So if at all you do not experience an improvement with the cipro, then this investigation result will provide us with information on which antibiotics would prove to be effective in your case

Also please do get in touch with your doctor at your earliest convenience for most accurate and effective recovery. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
