Brief Answer:
Yes, Ciprodex ear drops can be used safely in a case of perforated eardrum.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Ciprodex ear drops contain ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) and dexamethasone (a steroid). Both are not ototoxic (harmful to the inner ear) and can be safely used.

2. If the ear drum is perforated, these ear drops will help. Keeping the ear dry apples to avoiding water into the ear canals and not to the medicated ear drops.

3. These drops treat any infection and reduce any inflammation, thereby promoting healing.

4. Get a PTA (Pure Tone Audiometry) done to rule out any SensoriNeural Hearing Loss (SNHL). A Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL) is expected with a perforated ear drum which should disappear after the ear drum heals or, if not, is surgically replaced. Usually, small perforations of the ear drum heal on their own with no long term problems. Keep a regular follow up with an ENT Specialist.

5. The blister on the ear drum denotes either a myringitis (inflammation of the remaining ear drum as in some bacterial infections) or a viral infection (bullous myringitis). This condition can be very painful and anti-inflammatory medication may be required. Pain usually reduces as the blisters burst.

6. Your ENT Specialist can clean the ear discharge, examine the ear drum and send a swab for bacterial; fungal culture and antibiotic sensitivity.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
