Can Ciprofloxacin Be Taken When Suffering From Atrial Fibrillation?
Question: I am taking sotalol for A-frib and had surgery cancelled yesterday because of a UTI. My primary care doctor prescribed ciprofloxacin and the pharmacy even fulfilled the prescription even though my cardiologist and my research says this is a no-no. I need to take an antibiotic immediately but one which will affect my heart beat. Which are safe ones in this instance?
Brief Answer:
consider augmentin
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Your cardiologist was worried because ciprofloxacin can potentially affect the QT interval. This means that it can cause abnormality with the heart rhythm.
Another antibiotic septra can also cause this problem.
Augmentin, a penicillin antibiotic, is not known to interact with sotalol and is not associated with cardiac side effects. If you have no history of allergies to penicillins then this is an option that your general practitioner can consider.
It can be used for UTI
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
