Can Ferrous Gluconate Be Taken In Place Of Ferrous Sulfate?
Question: Our physician has found by lab test I am anemic. We tried iron (as Ferrous sulfate) but caused indigestion big time! Will ferric gluconate do better re tolerance? A friend said molasses would be very helpful, but from label Brer Rabbit does not have really a lot of iron (2% of daily requirement).

Iron deficiency anemia

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
I am sorry to hear that you have anemia. You have already tried the ferrous sulfate and had GI distress you can try the ferrous gluconate it maybe better tolerated. Prior to taking the iron I would recommend taking vitamin C as it will help the overall absorption of iron into your system. Molasses is not a good source of iron. If you are looking to increase dietary iron you will find more iron in red meats and green leafy vegetables. If you can tolerate beef liver is a real good source of iron.
