Can Fioricet, Norco And Klonopin Show False Positive In A Drug Test Report?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: I am an RN and tested positive for opiates, barbituates, and benzodiazapines. I was also in the Emergency department 3 days prior to testing and was given dilaudid, phenergen, and norflex. My prescriptions include fioricet, norco, klonopin, Gabapentin, and Nexium. I am on paid leave while the drug test is sent off and was told a medical review officer would call me to confirm medications I am on however I am worried that this will show up on my licensure. The random drug testing was a result of missing narcotics or something that was taken from anesthesia (I work in a surgical environment). Any advice to ease my mind would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what was taken but if it was any of the medications I am on I don't want to be falsely accused. Thanks for your help!

detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Considering all the medications you are taking ,it is expected for you to test positive in a drug test for Benzodiazepines ,Opiates and Barbiturates.

-Klonopin is a brand name for Clonazepam , which is a benzodiazepine.
-Norco contains a combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. As you may know hydrocodone is an opioid analgesic (opiate).
-Fioricet contains a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine. Butalbital is in a group of drugs called barbiturates.
-Dilaudid is a brand name for Hydromorphone ,which is an opioid pain medication ( an opiate ).

So considering this ,the results of your test are expected to be positive.Strange would be if the test was negative for these drugs.
If you are taking these medications with a doctor's prescription ,you won't have any problem at all.The prescriptions you have will clarify to them the origin of the drugs in your body.

You don't need to worry.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,
