Can Flecainide And Prograf Be Taken Together?
Question: I had a liver and kidney transpkant in 4/10/2010. Recently, they found out I had A fib. They did the usual check for blood clots and shocked my heart to put it back nto the proper beats. The doctor prescribed flecainide 50 mg 2x daily. My question is my transplant twam seems worried about this. Is there a problem between the Prograf (Tacrolimus) 4 mg per day and the flecanide??
Brief Answer:
Moderate interaction
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Unfortunately, both medications can interact if taken together as using flecainide together with Tacrolimus can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening.
Although it is a relatively rare side effect you may be more susceptible since you have a heart condition in the first place.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care

I'm unable to get ahold of my cardiologist, so should I quit taking the flecainide until I am able to get ahold of him?? Or instead of taking 2x a day should I take it once a day, or stop taking it until I see my cardiologist?? Right now I am taking 50mg 2x a day. Thank you for your insight.
Brief Answer:
Cutting off the dose must be done under medical supervision
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Discontinuing Flecainide should always be done under the strict medical supervision and it should be substituted by another agent to control atrial fibrillation such as beta blockers.
We're discussing potentially serious side-effects hence it's not at all recommended to do this on your own.
In the meanwhile please monitor yourself for any irregular heartbeats, dizziness or fainting. If at all observed then seek medical attention (to the nearest Urgent care/ER) as soon as possible.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
