Posted on Thu, 4 Apr 2019
Question: My cardiologist told me last week I had GERD I’ve been having pain in the center of my chest for a week now EKG was done it was normal is this pain part of GERD or should I have more test done? I do have a lot of indigestion. I have had a stress test and passed it and even worn a heart monitor for 30 day that showed I had PVC.

Brief Answer:

Management of GERD

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Since the EKG, and stress test gave normal results, it necessarily rules out any coronary artery disease.
So the chest pain is most likely GERD.

Management of GERD is mainly through life style modifications along with medications.

Lifestyle modifications include
Avoid spicy, fatty, and fried foods as well as chocolates and carbonated drinks.

Avoid citrus-containing foods like tomatoes, oranges, and fruit juices.

Eat multiple small portions of food rather than three large meals.

Limit caffeine intake. Have your dinner at least two hours before bedtime, so that your stomach is light before you go to bed.

Elevate the head end of the bed by placing wooden blocks under the bed post. Using extra pillows will not provide relief. Avoid cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.

Maintain a healthy weight.

You can also continue famotidine and prilosec. It can take up to 3 months for symptoms to completely resolve.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
