Can HIV Be Contracted Through A Single Unprotected Vaginal Intercourse?

Question: hi doc, i am a guy
I had unprotected vaginal intercourse with a girl, i don't know her hiv status. but since then i am too worried about hiv. i have been having heavy fatigue, mild heavy head, and mild shortness of breath also cough. i have been in depression. It's been 5 days since the intercourse and the symptoms started showing within 3 days of the incident. What chances do i have hiv?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist and venereologist). I have noted your concern.
The chance if HIV transmission from a single unprotected vaginal sexual intercourse is 1 in 2500. The flu like symptoms that you are experiencing are not HIV specific. You may take symptomatic treatment e.g tab combiflam and tab cetrizine. In any case you must screen for HIV with a 4th generatiin HIV screening test as well as for other STDs like Syphilis, Herpes Simplex at 4 weeks from sexual encounter.
Regards

are there any more symptoms to look for specific hiv symptoms. I am really into depression, thinking about this. Because my sexual partner might have several other partners so , and also i read about symptoms of hiv which are recent, like i am having fever, and unexplained severe fatigue with tiredness in i my legs and hand joints. also with heavyness of head.
And what if i get the girls hiv test done now, would that help in knowing the chances?

Brief Answer:
Get yourself screened
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Symptoms of acute HIV infection would not manifest so soon HIV infection.
They would start not less than at least a week after HIV infection and usually after 3-4 weeks of infection. Your symptoms are similar to a common viral flu and it could be just that coupled with symptoms of anxiety.
Screening of your sexual partner NOW would be helpful but that is not a substitute for your own STD screening because these tests have a window period of 2-4 weeks and what if your sexual partner acquired HIV infection just a week before having sex with you? That would not show up in her screening test!
You should get your own complete STD screening tests.
Regards
