HIV is known to have originated in Africa from apes or chimpanzees. It is difficult to really trace the origin. It has transmitted to others by intercourse or through blood and blood products.

The viral infection in the animals usually are species specific.
Many bacterial infections are likely to occur due to intercourse with animals like brucellosis, gonorrhea and syphilis.
