Can HIV Be Contracted Through Non-penetrative Sexual Activity?

Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: A girl working a strip club (In USA) visited my home 10 days back (July 3rd). She gave me an unprotected oral, but i did did not give back. However, I realised that she rubbing her wet vagina over my penis, but i did not insert. I am afraid of her HIV status and she gave me her reports taken in March 2015 which was all negative. However I was not convinced of the same and requested her to come for a HIV RNA test on July 9th. I got the report and it mentioned HIV-1 as negative. I request you to suggest if you want me to go for a HIV test as well or any other STD tests. However i did not find any skin lesions or any other symptoms and she said she did not have any STDs and her reports from March 2015 confirmed the same. I have attached her reports for your reference

Brief Answer:
No risk of HIV infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

In your case as the person you have had unprotected oral sex is HIV negative by PCR as well as ELISA test. So you need not worry as there is practically no chances of HIV infection. There is no need for you to undertake the test. But if you still feel anxious then I see no problem in taking a test after 12 weeks of incident by 4 th generation ELISA test.

Hope I answered your query.

Thanks doctor. However, The Elisa test was taken in March and the HIV RNA was taken last week and results are negative for both. I am bit concerned about the 3 months gap in these results. Can the PCR test detect the virus even if the exposure had happened 2-3 months back?

Brief Answer:
Yes PCR will detect the infection 2-3 months back.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
The window period for the PCR DNA test is 2-3 weeks of exposure. So this test can be taken between 2-3weeks (14-21 days) after your sexual encounter. A confirmatory test may be taken only if your PCR DNA test result is positive. If it comes back negative, you may re-test at the 3 month mark for conclusive results. International guidelines state that an HIV test is considered definite and conclusive when taken 3 months after an exposure. So to rule out any possibility of HIV infection I would suggest that you can yourself take a test at 3 months by 4 th generation ELISA test. But I again stress that the chances are high to be negative in your case.

Best of health
