Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I would like to tell that there is a huge spike in the viral load of HIV in the body in the first weeks following infection. Yes, those with HIV can pass it on to others fairly quickly following the first week. It depends upon the viral load if person had low immunity person can transmit it in even 3-4 days.
Hope I answered your query

Can a HIV RNA test be accurate after 45-60 days of exposure as this test is used for detecting the HIV at an early stage of exposure? I heard that the viral load count would be less after 4 weeks because of the anti bodies start developing by then... Will the count be still sufficient for the HIV RNA to detect the presence of virus? My friend had taken a HIV RNA test after a suspected exposure 45 days back and it came out negative
Brief Answer:
If PCR test negative ELISA test must be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Well come back.
Yes it is true that HIV PCR test done after 6-7 weeks is about 99% sensitive and is the test to detect HIV in early stages before 6 weeks sensitivity is about 97%. But if test is negative then 4 th generation ELISA test must be done after 12 weeks and again at 6 months as per international norms to detect HIV infection.
Take care
