Humalog and Novolin R both are rapid acting insulins, however NovolinR acts more rapidly than Humalog. They cannot be used interchangeably or substituted ideally.
Everything depends on other complex factors such as muscle mass, current sugar levels, activity. So if it has to be substituted only by a doctor who physically sees you.
For now I would opine, you can choose to substitute only if you can to get your NovolinR quickly in a day or two.
