Question: I have a very painful mouth ulcer on my left side of my tongue. I am not able to speak or eat because it's hurting a lot. I was taking a nutrolin B tablet for the last 2 days, applying zytee gel and taking dolo for pain but it still is not helping. Please suggest if you have to take any antibiotics or some other painkiller.

Brief Answer:
Hello,

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

You are suffering from a painful mouth ulcer on the left side of your tongue. It is hurting and you are not able to eat or speak. I can understand your concern.

Do continue to take the medicines prescribed by your treating doctor. You are advised to take liquid or semi solid diet & stay at rest.

Mouth ulcers take some time to get well. Avoid taking hot spicy, oily food, fried food. To get relieve from pain you can take acetaminophen, one sos when needed.

You are advised to use an antimicrobial mouthwash to prevent the spread of infection. Rinse your mouth and gargle with salt water 2-3 times a day,

Drink adequate water and fluids through a straw. Avoid speaking. To get relieve from pain you can use topical anesthetic like Orajel or Anbesol (but do not use it if you have lung or heart disease).

Maintain oral hygiene. Be careful while brushing. Mouth ulcer should get well in 2-3 weeks. But it is better to get it clinically examined by a dentist or ENT to rule out any underlying serious medical problem that needs to be treated urgently.

You have not mentioned since how long you have been having this ulcer and how you got the ulcer, if is it due to injury while chewing food or allergy reaction to bacteria.

Ulcers can occur due to thrush, oral lichen planus, canker sores/aphthous ulcers, etc.

If the ulcer is persistent for more than 3 weeks, get examined and get blood tests like Complete Blood Count (CBC), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), C - Reactive Protein Quantitative and tests for vitamin B12 & B9 and other required tests done to rule out serious disease or mouth cancer.

Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. Hope I have answered your question. Take care.
