Hello and welcome to "Ask A Doctor"
Yes, you can take hydrochlorothiazide and melatonin together, as no interactions has been reported.
Also since you have not specified which herbal supplement you wish to take along with melatonin, I cannot comment on that further. Kindly provide the details.

I want to take Somnapure, a herbal supplement for sleep which contains 3mg of Melatonin, it is recommended to take 2 tablets, a total of 6 mg.
I had read that taking Melatonin with HBP medication can restrict blood vessels and cause stroke. Is this true?
I think that 1mg of Lorazepam 2xday, and Somnapure would help me sleep better. I also have to take HBP medication as I mentioned. Thank you.

Hello again,
Thanks for writing back,
Sorry for the delay in writing back,
It has been studied that controlled release of melatonin helps to lower the blood pressure in many patients. Since, hydrochlorothiazide helps in lowering BP by acting on the kidneys, it does not constrict the blood vessels.
It is safe to use melatonin with hydrochlorothiazide. But make sure to get your physician's approval before starting Somnapure, as increased amounts of melatonin along with Lorazepam, can lead to excessive sedation or drowsiness.
I hope this helps,
Please feel free to discuss further,
Regards

If I continue to take high blood pressure medication will it go back to normal. It seems that my blood pressure increased due to anti-depressants I took. I am no longer taking it as it did not help me and made me feel awful. It was Gabapentin and Duloxtine which were prescribed by a new neurologist. My previous neurologist retired. It was supposed to help with back pain, insomnia and tingling in my body (not hands & feet). My bp is approx 147/71. How can I get it to come down further? Thank you. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back,
Yes, like you said, Gabapentin and Duloxetine, can cause hypertension in some individuals. But there is nothing for you to be worried about, as your BP falls perfectly within the normal range. It is bound go a little above 120/80 in elderly. Ideally, there is no need for a new BP medication, but if your doctor has prescribed you with one, please continue it and lets look at the effect.
Hydrochlorothiazide, acts by reducing the blood volume, by increasing the urine output. This also helps in removing any edema from your body.
You can take this medication, and see if it helps to bring your BP value to an even lower range.
I hope this helps,
Let me know if I can assist you any further,
Regards
