Can I Take Nexium Twice A Day I Have Gastritis That Is Causing My Heartburn?

Question: I have gastritis that is causing my Heartburn. Can I take Nexium twice a day and still take an antacid like Mylanta, Gaviscon if I feel a burn?My Acid Reflux symptoms are severe I practically have Heartburn everyday. can I take 40mg Nexium twice a day? The Nexium helps a little but it doesn't make it all day. I have started to use Natural supplements like DGL, Aloe Vera, ACV, Ginger to assist. If the Nexium 40mg doesn't work what other PPI can I take? I was once on Prilosec for 4 months before the Nexium. Or can I step down to an H2 Blocker since they are safer on the body? Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Yes you can take Nexium Twice a day. Yes you can take antacids.
All PPI have almost similar efficacy.
For complete relief, certain lifestyle/dietary changes are also important in addition to taking medications.
1. Weight reduction if obese
2 Avoiding alcohol/smoking
3. Avoid coffee, citrus, chocolates, carbonated beverages, tomatoes, fatty food
4. Eat multiple smaller meals
5. Go to bed at least 2-3 hours after food.

I have done the lifestyle change you have listed. I lost over 40 pds and thought I was going to get better. Can a PPI and an H2 block be taken on the same day? Is there a better PPI that works better than Nexium and Prilosec?

I know its my gastritis that’s activating my reflux. What advice/ healing foods can you give me to treat my Gastritis?

My Acid Reflux and GERD is so bad that it is really affecting my life. Im even considering to get the Nissen Surgery. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.

Yes, PPI and H2RA can be taken on the same day. Take PPI in the morning and H2RA in the night.
Like I said earlier all PPI are of same efficacy.
If gastritis is persisting get checked for H.pylori infection.
Regarding food, those to be avoided - Coffee, Citrus, Tomatoes, Fatty food, Spicy food.
Yogurt, high fiber diet will help in healing gastritis.

Doc,

I have been prescribed Nexium 20mg X 2 day and night.

I was also given Pepcid as needed

I also was gievn Sucralfate to coat my throat from the GERD stuck in throat visit at the ER.

Is it really safe if I take all three meds at didferent times of the day?

Thamk you! Since my Acid Reflux isnt getting controlled by the Meds. Is the next step to undergo Latroscopic Nissen Surgery? Seems like my GERD is progressing and my Esophogus is feels pretty inflammed.

Do you have any patients with my situation? I did all the lifestyle changes but still got reflux everyday.

Hiatal Hernia? I think My PA said I had a slight one
BMI? 22 - I used to be 26, I Lost a lot of weight 40 pds
PH Test? No

Should I ask my PA to order a PH Test? I think he ordered me a Esophagram Barium swallow.
