Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

The impact of the treatment depends on the stage of menstrual cycle you were in at the time of treatment. If you have regular 28-30 day cycles, you are likely to have conceived when you took the x-ray and other treatment. Else, you may have conceived later.

Ibuprofen and Diclofenac are category C drugs when given prior to 30 weeks of pregnancy and this means that evidences of harm in humans have not been confirmed and their use is based on the weight of benefits over the risks.

An x-ray of the lower back may not do much harm at such an early stage when the embryo may have been in the tube itself. Though, caution must be executed.

In the current scenario, since you are almost due for the sonogram, please go ahead with it and this will give you the status of your pregnancy. As the impact of the treatment on the pregnancy cannot be predicted accurately, you may take a calculated risk after consulting your obstetrician.

Anomalies scan can be done at a later stage in pregnancy. Cell free fetal DNA testing can give you an idea about some of the common defects and has the advantage of being non-invasive with less risk; this can be performed at about 10 weeks.

Meanwhile, please continue taking nutritional supplements and a healthy diet.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

Thank you very much for the reply doctor!

I have already taken my first scan on XXXXXXX 10th when i was 5 weeks 5 days. The scan showed normal development with gestational sac and yolk sac. Fetal pole is not detected...

Now I am due for my 2nd scan on 20th to check viability....My last 4 periods were on May 1st, April 1st, March 5th and XXXXXXX 1st. I didnt get my periods in Feb... I have been having having regular and irregular periods on and off and was under homeopathic medication..

In the above scenario, what would be your opinion with respect to this pregnancy?

Can you also pls explain a bit more about cell free DNA testing? What kind of anomalies will it help to detect? Can I know if any prob has occured cos of xray or physiotherapy?

also pls find attached my scan report

regards

Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

I have gone through the report. As the pregnancy is 5-6 weeks, you are likely to have conceived around mid-May. The fetal pole is detected at the end of 5 weeks by an experienced sonographer and also the fetal cardiac activity can be made out. As it could not be done in your case, the repeat sonogram should be able to clarify the issue.

The course of the seedling fibroid and the effect on the pregnancy should be assessed regularly. An intramural fibroid that grows can cause some inconvenience.

As I have already mentioned, the drugs you have taken are not likely to cause much harm. Short wave diathermy may cause birth defects and low birth weight as seen in studies. The amount of impact on your pregnancy cannot be judged accurately as you were in very early stages when it happened. Similar is the case with the possible radiation through x-ray also, though I have seen many patients with uneventful pregnancy outcomes after exposure in early pregnancy.

So, going by my experience and opinion, in the current scenario, I think you should wait for your next sonogram and prefer a trans-vaginal sonogram, before you plan any further action.

Cell-free DNA testing is a recent procedure that can be done as early as 10 weeks of gestation and it helps to identify Down's Syndrome, Edwards' Syndrome and Patau syndrome, the three most important chromosomal anomalies. It is a simple blood test as opposed to the invasive procedures of chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis done to detect chromosomal anomalies. It is based on the fact that fetal DNA is seen in the mother's blood.

Hope I have answered your query. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be ready to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
