Can Invokana And Trulicity Be Used Together For Diabetes?

They can be used together but dose adjustment is needed- please see below for the detailed answer.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Both the medications you mention, trulicity and invokana can be used for diabetes type 2 and can be taken together. The only caution related to their use together is the dose. Because they have a synergistic effect (same effect on sugar levels by decreasing it), dose adjustments might be needed. Generally, it is recommended to start one and if not good control with the optimal dose of one of the medications the other one is added with a gradual increase of dose till the optimal dose or the dose that gives the desired effect is reached.
How has your experience been so far with the other diabetes medications? Farxiga is in the same class with invokana and is expected that the desired effect (changes in the blood sugar levels) and the side effects would be similar.
To conclude I would say:
- both medications are used for diabetes 2 and are found very effective in glucose control in the studies. Both of them are quite new in the market, being approved for use as drugs for diabetes in the last 3-4 years.
- the only caution with any combination of drugs that have the same effect (in our case blood sugar levels decrease) is the dose adjustment. Your doctor should have already considered this starting one medication at a time and increasing dose till the optimal dose and if no good enough effect with one than the other one should have been added.
- farxiga is in the same class with invokana so it is expected that the effect with invokana will be the same as farxiga
I hope this is helpful and answers to your question.
Kind regards,
Dr. Zotaj Antoneta, General & Family Physician
