Question: Hi, doctor. My oral surgeon just injected Kenolog steroid into my gums to try to mitigate the effects of trigeminal neuralgia where one of the symptoms of TN is making the gums and teeth hurt and burn. Just wondering what u think of this treatment and also how long does it stay in your system? It was done 2 days ago and so far, symptoms seem the same but also feel a heaviness type feeling in side of face injected.

Brief Answer:
Kenalog is a long acting steroid works by reducing the swelling in gums.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Kenalog injection is a long acting steroid called triamcinolone. It reduces body's immune response and thus decreases swelling of gums. The unique issue with a Kenalog injection that differentiates it from oral steroids is that once the injection is administered the effects last for at least 3 weeks. With tablets the effects are gone within about 24 hours or less.
As your symptoms have not come down even after 2 days of taking the shot, it implies the dosage given was less or the drug is ineffective in decreasing your gum pain.
Please consult your dentist once and explain your condition to him. He may give you alternative medication or increase the dose of kenalog.
Hope i have answered your question. Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Thank you.
Take care.

Hi, doctor and thank u for your informed answer. Since the injections 3 days ago, noticing some uncomfortable burning and tingling on the corners of the mouth and same symptom inside cheek of mouth (he injected the gums, however, not the cheek). Just wondering if this sounds normal to you and if u feel it is a temporary thing that will dissipate?

Brief Answer:
Those symptoms might be due to trigeminal neuralgia itself.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
Burning and tingling sensations at the corners of mouth and inner cheeks is not normal. It may be related to trigeminal neuralgia. For the time being, you can take tab. Pregabalin 75mg once daily at night to relieve the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia.
Hope I have answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you.
Take care.
