Can Losartan Be Taken Along With Diltiazem?

Question: My mother has been on 100mg Losartan for many years, for high blood pressure. Recently, her doctor prescribed an additional BP med after her annual doctor's appointment. Her BP was 145/90. The additional med is 120 mg Diltiazem XR. My mother is small (less than 100 pounds), and frail. We are concerned about side effects (dizziness, nausea, etc.). Is it safe for her to take both of these meds? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Should start the medication very carefully
Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,
I understand your concerns. In her age the possibility of hypotension as a side effect from medication is more frequent.
You can do the following; for the first three days divide her Losartan into 2 doses. Give 50 mg losartan with 120 mg Dilthiazem in the morning, if she is fine, give another 50 mg Losartan in the evening. In case she develops hypotension, she should lie down, drink much liquids and omit the next dose.
Hope I could help you
Wishing a good health to your mother
