Can Macrobid And Amoxicillin-clavulanate Be Taken Together While Having Ear Infection?

Question: Hi i have been prescribed macrobid 100mg twice a day for 3 days for a UTI I am also supposed to be taking amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day for 7 days for a ear infection. Are they both safe to take together?
Brief Answer:
safe
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
they can be taken together as there is no interaction between them. If there is an antibiogram that permits it then perhaps your doctor could consider escalating treatment to amoxicillin-clavulanate which would be useful for both infections, instead of adding macrobid.
Kind Regards!

I am already on my 2nd day of macrobid but feel like it’s not easing any symptoms, I’m going to start my amoxicillin now anyway but in the likely event that the macrobid hasn’t worked can amoxicillin cure a Uti?
Brief Answer:
usually not...
Detailed Answer:
Amoxicillin on its own is usually inactive against urinary tract bacteria. Amoxicillin with clavulanate may be effective against some of them though. Have you done an antibiogram?
If the pathogen is sensitive to macrobid then it may require a few more days of treatment. We usually give it for a week.
Kind Regards!
