Can Nexium Taken For An Episode Of Chest Tightness And Stomach Pain Cause Black Stool?

Question: Yes, I had an episode of chest tightness and stomach pain yesterday Tuesday that was sever. Heart checked out fine, GI md thinks it is probably Gastric reflux disease. He prescribed for relief take two nexum at night and two in morning. I took two last night and also a pepsid. I took two this morning. Feel better but my stools were black. Can Nexum cause that. Nexum pills are 20mg each
Brief Answer:
different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It is not a known side effect of either nexium or pepcid.
The medications that can cause dark stool are- iron tablets, peptobismol or a similar medication
Blood from the stomach and small intestines can also cause a black appearance because the blood is altered as it passes through the large intestines and causes the stool to appear black.
Very severe GERD or peptic ulcer disease can sometimes be associated with a small amount of bleeding
If you did not use pepto bismol or iron supplements then it may be important to let your doctor know about the black stool
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
