Can Nifuroxazide Be Taken For Viral Gastroenteritis While Having Anaphylactic Reaction?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: I'm in France with viral gastroenteritis. The doctor here prescribed Nifuroxazide 200mg. I am severely allergic (have had an anaphylactic reaction to Macrodantin in USA about 20 yrs ago...chills, fever, rash, difficulty breathing) and went to ER. Have avoided it since then.
Apparently Nilfuroxazide is Macrodantin in USA. Not identical molecular structure, but I plan to stop immediately. Only took ONE dose 4 hrs ago.
My question is how long do I need to be concerned...what is half life and when is it totally excreted?
Thank you XXXX

Brief Answer:
NO need to be too worried! Be relaxed and observant!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this allergic reaction you had and the fear resulting from consuming this drug at this time. Yes, they are both from the same class of drugs. The chances of you developing a repeat allergic reaction form this medication are low. However, I prefer to be safe than sorry and that has always been my principle. And based on this principle, I will join you in saying, stay off the drug irrespective of how minimal your chances are to have another allergic reaction.

Viral gastroenteritis needs no antibiotics. I will recommend that you drink much water to compensate for any fluid losses. Replacing this drug with another is not particularly important unless the doctor thinks a bacteria is responsible fro your infection.

In all, the chances of having a repeat allergic reaction from this drug are small. I will recommend you stop and monitor only for now. If you have no symptoms, there is no need to seek further medical care. Antibiotics don’t help with viral gastroenteritis. Drink much water and all would settle within 3-5days.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
