Can PCOS Be Aggravated By Low Dose Adderall?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: I have been diagnosed with pcos. I cannot get pregnant without Femara and trigger shot. I am a healthy weight for my height. My periods are irregular, typically 45-60 days apart, and I do not ovulate.

There are two time periods in my life when I took a low dose adderall for an extended period of time without a doctors rx. 10mg, once a day. The first time was for a year, and I am currently taking it now.

When I take the adderall, my periods immediately change to 28-32 day cycles, and I feel better. I actually get pms the week before, and I did get pregnant without intervention (but miscarried at 8 weeks).

I have tried to research the correlation online but have found nothing. In fact, most people complain of adderall contributing to irregular periods.

So my first question is, 1. How is the adderall helping me to become regular and feel normal? And 2. How can I bring this up to my doctor? I want to have a doctors rx, and take it legitimately. I don't believe I have ADD, I do have a higher than average intelligence level, have slight social anxiety, which I feel is also lessoned by the low dose adderall. Please help.

Brief Answer:
Adderall should be limited. Consult with doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

1) ADDERALL (Amphetamine) is a psycho stimulant drug and it works by increasing activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, nor-epinephrine and dopamine.

Regular or frequent using of this drug may create adverse reaction and irregular to delayed period for several months due to hormonal imbalance and changes in Hypothalamus -Pituitary- Ovarian axis. I think it should be limited.

Here, I suggest you to consult with your Psychologist or Psychiatrist to justify whether you actually need Adderall therapeutically or NOT.

2) PCOS is the another reason to get irregular delayed period. Some underlying causes like thyroid disturbance (Hypothyroid), high serum prolactin level, mental stress, emotional upset, pelvic infection, irregular diet habit, Over Weight etc are also responsible for above clinical feature.

I suggest you to undergo one pelvic ultrasound scan (to know current status) and complete hormonal profile (like LH/ FSH, Estrogen, Progesterone, Prolactin level, serum TSH, blood Testosterone & DHEAS etc) to rule out other underlying causes and confirm the diagnosis.

TREATMENT: Combined hormonal pill or Progesterone supplement and Metformin are the MAINSTAY of medical treatment. Ovulation inducer or other triggering agents can be given according to follicular response.

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling is a surgical treatment that can trigger ovulation in women who have PCOS and is willing to be pregnant with H/O failed ovulation despite of fertility treatment and weight loss.

I suggest you to consult with your Gynecologist or Infertility specialist regarding this for proper guidance and management of the case effectively.

Hope, above information is very much helpful & understandable to you. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
