Question: my hubby has Alzheimer and takes 10mg Aricept, also simvastatin and Lipronsil (blood pressure and cholesterol) he has been prescribed Penicillin for an insect bite which has gone nasty. He is 62 and apart form no short term memory provided he stays in routine, lives a normal life and works part time. Since taking the penicillin 3 days all he does is sleep, could this be an interaction of the drugs?

Brief Answer:
No interaction of drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on clinical history and present symptoms, my opinion is as follows.
1. None of the previous medications have any adverse reactions or drug interactions with penicillin.
2. Usually in insect bites, to reduce the itching or allergic symptoms, antihistamine drugs are also prescribed. They are known to be sedatives and could induce sleep. The antihistamines must have been given in the last three times and this could have led to increased sleep.
3. Penicillin is given only for secondary infection cover.
4. Additionally Due to insect bite and associated stress and infection, he might be taking more rest.

Penicillin or any drug interaction is not causing increased sleep.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
