Can Polymyxin-B And Trimethoprim Ophthalmic Solution Be Used When Allergic To Sulfa?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 May 2017
Question: I am allergic to sulfa drugs and penicillin. But I'm schedule for cataract surgery on Monday and am asked to begin taking POLYMYXIN-B TRIMETHOPRIMOPHTH SOL. The container box labels the eyedrops as Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim Ophthalmic solution USP. Is it possible I will have a serious reaction to this medicine?
Thank you for helping me,

Brief Answer:
Yes if you are allergic to sulfa drugs please dont take these .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
How are you ?
I am Dr Rahul Rathee and it will be my pleasure to answer your query .
I can understand your concern and its very intelligent and aware of you to read the ingredients of the medicine prescribed to you before using it
I really wonder why your doctor prescribed you the eye drops containing sulfa salts if your doctor was told by you that you are allergic to sulfa salts .
Your concern about using it is very genuine and you are absolutely right with your doubt as using sulfa in any form.( oral or eye drops ) can cause severe hypersenstivity reaction .
So please dont use this eye drop and immedietly bring this in to the notice of your doctor who prescribed it . If you have not informed your doctor that you are allergic to sulfa salts , kindly inform him now and request him to prescribe some alternative antibiotic eye drops which dont contain sulfa salts as there are numerous other alternative eye drops available .
I hope you are satisfied with the explanation given by me , if this is the case kindly dont forget to close this discussion with a positive review , but , if you still have any other doubts , please feel free to ask me .
All the very best for your upcoming surgery .
Regards
Dr Rahul Rathee .
