Can Prednisone Cause Weakening Of The Spine?

One of your specialists suggested a biphosphate supplement, which he is now taking. The pain is of two kinds - a constant discomfort, and a sharp stabbing pain, which can happen when he moves in certain ways, and which has him so cautious about any exertion, that he is losing muscle condition and becoming very weak.
He was given a bottle of Cannabinol by a friend who is taking it for her back pain, but we don't know how much he should be taking, as it was not prescribed for him. If he were to take a higher dose, would this reduce the stabbing pains?
I would like him to go to a pain clinic - what would you recommend?
I'd recommend seeing a Spine Specialist.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
First, it's necessary to have imaging studies done (of his lumbar spines such as CT scan or MRI).
Since he used prednisone for a long time a compressive fracture of vertebrae may be the culprit.
Biphosphonates may help in strengthening of the vertebrae, as the cannabinol may help with pain, but if there is a significant compressive osteoporotic fracture, kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty may be necessary.
Increasing the dose of cannabinol may control the pain, but evaluation by a pain Specialist is necessary.
For a more accurate diagnosis and precise treatment, I'd recommend you see a Spine Specialist.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
