Can Verapamil, Ambien And Lisinopril Be Taken Together?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: My dr has ordered verapamil 80mg b.i.d. I am concerned because the literature mentions to not take several meds that I am currently taking. One is aspirin, I take ambien at bedtime and I take lisinopril daily as well. It also mentions that the statins may have a negative reaction as well. My dr said yes go ahead and take it. I feel anxious and stressed but I have called and his nurse said to continue all other meds.

Brief Answer:
Medications are ok to take if diagnosis justifies it

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

none of the medications you are mentioning is generally unsafe to take. It always depends whether the diagnosis (heart condition, high cholesterol) justifies taking it in relation to possible side effects. I am sure your treating doc has done that work and finds it justified since not taking the meds can be even more dangerous.

So as far as i can say it is ok to take them as advised by your doc.

Best regards

Why then does the patient product insert say, do not take this medication while taking lisinopril, sedatives, aspirin or medications to treat high cholesterol?

Brief Answer:
Dose adjustment and frequent monitoring may be necessary

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

i encourage you to be careful and critically ask about the medications. The insert sais that, but that does not mean you cant take those together at all.

It means though that for aspirin, simvastatin and sedatives there can be an increase in blood levels (and therefor increase effects and side effects) for those drugs when combined with verapamil. So your doc needs to check and make sure if there are dose adjustments necessary (means lower dosage of the mentioned drugs to avoid side effects like bleedings or liver damage or higher sedative effects than wished for).
However, for verapamil and lisonopril in combination there are no significant side effects reported, except blood pressure may get lower than aimed, so you should monitor that regularly also which you are probably already doing.

Hope this helps you more and gives you a basic information for further discussion with your doc, best regards
