default
Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: Hi, I am 20 weeks pregnant and have received Total Vitamin D level as 8(severly deficient). I am worried, Can it impact my baby? Also my Gynae (not a expert for this problem) has suggested to take Calcirol 60000IU once a week for a month. Is it fine? what else i can do here to take care of my body as well as baby both? Thanks, XXXXX

Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments: 1) Vitamin D is required to maintain proper metabolism of calcium & phosphorus, which help to build baby's bones & teeth. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy can cause growth retardation & skeletal deformities. It may also have an impact on birth weight. Pregnancy related complications like PRE-ECLAMPSIA (Hypertension) etc is quite common with vitamin-D deficiency. It also includes autoimmune disease & gum disease etc. 2) Daily requirement of Vitamin-D during pregnancy period is 4000 IU and 6000 IU during lactation period. CALCIROL 60,000 IU once a week is quite sufficient to increase the level of Vitamin-D from previous state. 3) In addition, you must take Fish liver oil, fatty fish (like Salmon, Tuna), and fortified milk, egg, and cereal products, containing vitamin D. Be sure to check food labels: Some eggs, cheeses, yogurts, and cereals are fortified while others aren't. All milk is vitamin D fortified. Hope, I have guided you properly. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Wish your good health and successful motherhood.
