Can A 4 Year Old Take 200 Mg Of Benzonatate Gel Cap?
Question: Can a 4 year old take 200 mg of Benzonatate gel cap? Over the counter does not work such as RObitussin or the RX Bromfed DM Syrup prescribed for him does NOT work. Coughs until vomiting constantly. Don't know what to use. PLEASE RECOMMEND SOMETHING HIS DOCTOR CAN RX TO HIM or can you do this?I got your email. DId not anser my question at all...you told me not to give an RX to a child not prescribed for him. I know that. I asked you what RX(s) specifically are strong enough to ask his dr. to prescribe besides Bromfed (does not work), maybe along the same lines as Benzonatate, which I have as an adult. If you can't answer my question, I want to be reimbursed for an answer I already know. I asked you to recommend something via RX.

I am sorry for the situation of your grandson.
Benzonatate gel cap are not prescribed for children younger than 10 years old.
If your grandson is having cough, I would suggest as following:
- if it is a dry cough only: take anti-hystamine drug (ketotifene, benadryl, etc.). Or his pediatrician can prescribe Loratadine.
- if the cough is productive, then antibiotic is needed together with mucolytic (carbocysteine or acetylcisteine).
- can discuss with his doctor about a short course of corticosteroid injections for 3 days
The permanent solution should be treating the underlying cause:
- common cold?
- bronchitis?
- or any other upper respiratory infection?
- reflux?
I also advise to:
- try to humidify his room
- do aerosol therapy (with saline or becometasone)
- raise his head (from shoulders to head) to relieve coughing
- let him drink tea. I usually advise a mixture of bay leaves with XXXXXXX and chamomile with added sugar to taste
