Brief Answer:
catheter has to be immediately repositioned in emergency department

Detailed Answer:
Hello madam,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.

This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.

PICC line is - A peripherally inserted central catheter ( central venous catheter) inserted into a vein in the arm rather than a vein in the neck or chest.

As stated by you 'The wings and cap were still sewn to my neck but hanging down was 2-3 inches of purple tubing that came out of my neck where is therest of the line chest hurts' , it says that it needs immediate intervention of a casualty specialist. Hence i advice you to immediately go to a emergency medicine doctor as soon as possible.

complications of PICC are:
Possible complications from the use of a central venous catheter include:

1. Bleeding
2. Infection, requiring treatment with antibiotics or removal of the catheter.
3. Blood clots, which can form in blood vessels, especially in the arms.
4. A blocked line- Regular flushing of the catheter can help keep the line clear and preventing infections
5. Kinking of the catheter and should be repositioned or replaced.

In your case the catheter has to be immediately repositioned or replaced to avoid above stated complications.

For future purpose you can take steps at home to care for your catheter:

1. Wash your hands with antiseptic solution before you touch your central line.

2. Try to keep the exit site dry. This can help prevent infection. When you shower, cover the site with waterproof material, such as plastic wrap.

3.Tape the central line to your body to prevent it from getting pulled.

4. While wearing clothies make sure that doesn't rub or pull on your central line.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .

Brief Answer:
There is no line floating inside, please do not panic

Detailed Answer:
Hello madam,
Thanks for writing back to us.

I would like to make some clarifications to my earlier reply

1. The line needs to be re positioned. It is not that the remaing line is floating inside your body. Please do not get worried.

2. The purple tubing is the line itself and has got dislodged from its fixed position.

3. Re positioning is done by the emergency room doctor or nurse. That is the reason I suggested that you please visit the emergency room or call for your doctor and get the PICC line fixed back to its place.

4. This is a small but important manipulation else the purpose of the PICC line will not be served. Please be assured that is is not a life threatening condition but requires immediate medical attention.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .

Brief Answer:
Your condition needs medical intervention

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

Your condition needs medical intervention which can be done by a registered interventionist. Hence, I request you to kindly consult a doctor in the Emergency Room regarding repositioning of the PICC.
In the previous messages i have already advised you to measures to be taken keep the PICC in position.
But since it has to be repositioned , kindly get it done by a specialised Doctor.

Answered by Dr. Riyanka Chail (17 hours later)
Brief Answer:
kindly go to a higher tertiary centre care

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

I would like to know what was the doctor's opinion at the emergency room.

From what you described earlier, my opinion was you need repositioning. X-ray would have helped us visualise the position of the PICC and to take further decisions of removing the PICC and reinserting a fresh one while you are under proper antibiotic theraphy to avoid any infections.

Perhaps visiting another centre if the last one was not useful is an option.

Hope your query is answered .
Regards,
Dr.Riyanka
