Can A Bone Graft Be Reduced After It Has Been Put In Like This Or Once It Is In Place It Has To Stay Like This?
Question: I recently had a bone graft done to a bottom left premolar, tooth #21. The tooth was also extracted. I feel an uncomfortable heaviness and some prolonged pain. Can a bone graft be reduced after it has been put in like this or once it is in place, it has to stay like this?

I read through your query and must say that bone graft usually will get reduced by itself in few weeks time...If you can sent the pic of the clinical site where bone graft was done we can reach a better conclusion. I suggest you to take some antinflammatory medicines if you have too much of pain. Otherwise do gargle with warm salt water for thrice daily for a week. Please sent the pic also to reach a proper conclusion.

However, u were a help just speaking generally. As I understand it, there are a few different type bone grafts and not sure which one oral surgeon opted for, would reduction be applicable in all four options? I believe he used a powder but not sure.

Hii thank you for your followup query. I read through it. I must say that all bone grafts will get resorbed little in few weeks time. No bone graft will form bone 100 percent. During this process there can be pain and slight amount of inflammation. To reduce these I told you to take any antiinflammatory medicine. If powder type bone graft is used it may resorb slightly more and also faster. So pls dont get stressed thinking about the pain. It will be fine within few days. Do warm salt water gargle too regularly. Stressfree and calm mind is the best medicine for any problem. Hope you understood what I meant. Hi, Dr. XXXXXXX I'm writing again due to an urgent situation that just came up. Had a tooth that erupted (#21) and needed to be extracted. Due to having trigeminal neuralgia, I need to have an implant placed at time of extraction and always have. This time, however, surgeon found little to no bone and did only a bone graft (putty one) and said I have to wait a few months and if I tried to have implant placed now, after only a few weeks, it would disrupt the graft and possible infection. Just wanted to get your feedback on this before visiting another oral surgeon who probably would attempt an implant. Just don't want to do more harm than good. Thank u so much.

I would do bone graft and then wait for the body to take up the graft and then get a favourable bone height and width then I will place implant. This is because if we place inplant with little or no bone and pack the implant area with bone graft , the graft will resorb or go away fast and implant will not get fixed and it will start shaking (get failed). So better to give time and then do implant. Its because of no bone or very little scenario , if there is some bone we could have tried placing implant and graft around it. Just one last follow up general question since I am unable to send a pic. I did ask and found out that a putty type material was used for bone graft, not powder. I assume from what u said prior that even this putty will reduce in time? Question is this - the oral surgeon thinks that putting the implant in before the 2 or 3 months is up may work since I do not want to wait that long for an implant. Just wanted to get your thoughts on that. Thanks so much.

Doctor, first thank u for your insights. After the bone grafting surgery, my dentist noticed (as did I since they are painful) that I have either a few bony fragments or dentist said possibly fibroma on the side of socket where implant will be placed. My question is should I have these taken care of prior to having the implant surgery or would it be better for the oral surgeon to remove them at same time as implant?
