default
Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: I am wondering if my right carotid artery can be opened or is it being closed permanent? I do at times go blind in my right eye, am dizzy sitting or standing and at times pass out.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Its important to know complete details about the occlusion of your right carotid artery so that we can discuss the treatment options available to you.

Carotid artery stenosis (partial luminal narrowing) or occlusion (complete luminal block) are seen more commonly with the aging of the general population and the availability of noninvasive imaging studies. It is a bit surprising to see you having this problem at 45 years of age.

Treatment also depends of the nature of condition and whether it is symptomatic or asymptomatic disease. The treatment options currently available are by

1. taking oral medications to dissolve the block and prevent further narrowing,
2. opening the block by angioplasty and inserting a stent to maintain it
3. endarterectomy which is a surgical procedure

Please send in complete details so we can discuss in detail.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
