Can A Low PLT (platelet Count) Can Have Various Causes?
Question: Dear Doctor, I understand that a low PLT (platelet count) can have various causes. However, if someone who is administered hydroxyurea has a a PLT within the normal range and ceases using the medication, then is it possible for the PLT to fall below the normal reference range two days later and continue to fall until it gets down to 9 even though the patient has not used hydroxyurea for 10 day? That is, can the effect of hydroxyurea still lower the PLT this many days after its use has ceased or is the low PLT likely to have some other cause?
Brief Answer:
Hydroxyurea can cause low platelets as side effect.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Hydroxyurea is known to lower platelet count / cause thrombocytopenia.
The effect of hydroxyurea can last even after discontinuing the drug.
The platelets need to be monitored and platelet transfusion needs to be done if the counts fall to very low level.
At 9000 / cubic mm are very low and may be dangerous.
Thus., you are advised to consult your treating doctor and remain under supervision.
Thanks and take care
