Can A Pap Smear Detect All Types Of The HPV Virus?

Question: I have a couple of questions. I need to know if a pap smear can detect all types of the hpv virus or if the colposcopy will have to be done in case there is more? Also can type 18 HPV cause genital warts? Third, I have a raised, kind of flat pink tender spot on the outer edge of my vagina, what could this be?

Brief Answer: Warts are common & treatable; visit dermatologist Detailed Answer: Hi there, No a PAP smear cannot detect ALL types of HPV virus. It is a non-specific test & a mere pointer. A colonoscopy may be adviseable if there are perianal warts & or bowel disorders that are suspect & a lifestyle that involves the anal route. Yes HPV18 can most certainly cause genital warts. The lesion you describe could very well be a wart with a different morphology or a condition called seborrheic keratosis.
