Brief Answer:
Sprain is less likely to cause a blood clot.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

A sprain in the ankle is not likely to cause a blood clot in the leg unless you have rested for too long time without any leg exercise. The pain in whole leg and swelling can be due to a bone injury, tendon injury or a hematoma formation. This needs a direct examination and a few investigations like X-ray or MRI scan to find out the cause. Till then avoid all painful activities and use an elastic ankle brace for support to the area.

I hope this answers your query.
